Windjana Gorge

Freshwater crocodiles, freshwater crocodiles and more freshwater crocodiles. They were amazing! We didn’t see them at first. We thought it was just logs lying on the sandbanks. A good thing a fellow tourist pointed them out to us or we would have missed them. But there they were, all over the river bank and then further on into the gorge they were all floating in the water and swimming around. It was very exciting as this was the first time we had seen crocodiles in the wild.

We got as close as we could to them to take photos. When they got a little cranky at us they would lift their bellies up in protest. We would get the message and retreat and they would relax again!

Windjana Gorge itself was amazing. Full of the Kimberley butterflies, plus two or three other species. Beautiful rock faces, peaceful rivers and lovely artwork. Again, by the master artist!

The birdlife was also amazing! Plenty of different sounds through the air, and some little Rock wallabies skipping around in the rocks and caves off the side.

We did not do the whole walk into the Gorge as it was a hot day and the kids were getting tired, having already walked Tunnel Creek. We thoroughly enjoyed it though and it is a must see for anyone travelling this way! From Derby its about 2 hours along the famous Gibb River Road. About half of it is sealed, the other half is rough driving.
