Around Straya
Tom Price and the Pilbara! The place where the dingoes howl at night, the dirt is a rich red and you get amazing tiger eye rocks! What an amazing town and place! The town was named after Mr Tom Price who discovered the mountain containing iron ore in the area. Set up for mining, this place just had all the facilities you could think of. There were plenty of water spots for caravans to fill their water reservoirs up, public showers, dump spots, rubbish bins particularly for caravans. It was such a hospitable town. Even the shower roses in the caravan park had such a strong water flow that clearly there did not seem to be any water problem in Tom Price. The Library staff were friendly, everybody was friendly really. It was clean. It was well taken care of. We loved it!
While spending time in the Library the staff did not have enough people to run singing time with the kids so I (Catherine) was roped into leading out the singing for all the Mums and kids. It was quite a unique experience.
Tiger Eye Pool
Tiger Eye Pool was the main area we stayed at while in Tom Price. It was approximately 7 minutes from the town in a beautiful place with a swimming hole and running stream. It was running when we first got there, but ten days later, when we left, the stream had dried up and there was very little water left. We spent a wonderful time there though, with a fire almost every night. The kids were afraid of the dingoes initially and their howling did not make them feel safe. They did get used to it though.
We heard the Stony Curlew for the first time. We thought the noise was the sound of dingoes but it was in fact a solemn bird called a Stony Curlew. If you look up their sound you will hear what we heard every single night. It was very eerie!
Mt Nameless
Mt Nameless was in full view of the town and we got to climb it. We initially were intending to climb it by foot and then figured out there was a four wheel drive track up the mountain and so took that instead. We were glad we did as it was a long drive even in a car and there were no facilities or toilets at the top and it was freezing one you got up there! What an awesome view though! You could see all the different mine sites around and see the beautiful country of the Pilbara.
