Around Straya

We were very happy to arrive in Carnarvon. We were ready for a bit of a rest from the beaches and have a little bit of town life. We stayed at a Caravan Park the whole time. We stayed for 5 days and the highlights were the amazing fruit icecreams sold locally. We gave ourselves a treat of them every day while we were there. The flavours of the fruit icecream (which was just fruit mashed up and frozen) were soursop, fig, black sapote, mango and banana.
On the Wednesday night at the Caravan Park the management stoked up the woodfired oven for everyone to make pizza. We used a lot our bulk flour we had brought to make some home made dough and delicious pizzas! It was a lot of fun sitting around, waiting for the oven to heat up and talking to the locals. Everybody was surprised at how many pizzas we had. We had enough for two meals of it. They said we had too much time on our hands to be able to make it all home made.
We made good use of the library at Carnavon who had a very helpful librarian who helped us find out about all the local birds of the place. We realised what we had thought were eagles along the journey were in fact black kites. There were plenty of kestrels as well.
A highlight of Carnarvon was the space museum. What an amazing place! Definitely something for the to do list for anyone travelling there. They had a space capsule simulator that we all got to have a ride in plus a replica of the rocket used to take the Apollo Missions to space. We learned that there were many successful Apollo missions to the moon with the Exception of Apollo 13 which blew up. Carnarvon was a key player in the first successful moon landing which was Apollo 11.
