Around Straya
Babinda Boulders was the best free camp site we have ever seen. A beautiful location with actual showers and toilets for free. There was no hot water but the weather was so hot we did not need hot water.
Babinda town itself was very cute and you could see the tallest mountain in QLD from there, Mount Bartle Frere, named after Henry Bartle Frere, a British Colonial administrator. One of the soldiers in WW11 from the USA was killed there after coming back from an operation. It was a cloudy day and he unfortunately drove his aeroplane into the mountain and died there. A memorial to him and his service is placed at Babinda Boulders.
The actual Babinda Boulders is an awesome place to swim and jump off the rocks into the water. The water is very shallow and kid friendly. They said there was no crocodiles there but we were a little cautious anyway.
The walk down the Canyon was very majestic and spectacular with huge boulders that dropped straight down to the river.
There was another free camp site just outside the town of Babinda away from Babinda Boulders and we stayed there a further three days after the Boulders. That was also a beautiful place with toilets and showers and a lovely river you could swim in during the day. The only thing that marred the place was very noisy campers at night.
