Cloncurry and Quamby Rock Fossicking

After Mt Isa we went and stayed the night in the town of Cloncurry and the next day went rock fossicking in a place called Quamby. Quamby is a ghost town with the only thing left being a pub, which has also been abandoned.

Cloncurry is such a beautiful place with lots of beautiful bush and trees and a lovely river. It’s like a little oasis in the desert. When we got to the caravan park there was almost nobody there so we had the caravan park to ourselves. We had fun feeding a bunch of grey and black birds. We never found out their names but they were very noisy and greedy! The caravan park owner was a little grumpy as well but we managed to make friends with him.

The next day after Cloncurry we left early to follow some GPS coordinates to find the location of Quamby and look for amethysts. The owner of the caravan park said there were a few sites where you could find some really lovely purple amethyst but they were further away so we decided to only do the closer one.

The GPS took us to the middle of nowhere on a road where the only landmark was a little hill and a dry river bed. We looked for amethysts along the river bed for a while and then Gerson found a whole pile of amethyst further down. We were very excited to find them and were trying to stop ourselves taking the whole lot but we could only take a few because they were heavy.

It was a lot of fun to look for the amethyst.
